MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) went 2-for-5 with two runs, and the University of Michigan baseball team grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning only to see Coastal Carolina score four runs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 4-all tie for the 8-4 victory on the first day of the Chanticleer Classic Friday afternoon (March 15) at TicketReturn.com Field.

Michigan had only one hit in the first but took advantage of three walks, a hit-by-pitch and three Coastal errors to score three runs. Junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Maezes reached on an infield single, and O'Neill, who went to second on a wild pitch, scored on an error. Maezes stole third and scored on a throwing error, putting the Maize and Blue up 2-0. The next three Wolverines walked, and freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) scored as junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) reached on another error.

Coastal Carolina scored a run in the bottom of the first before taking the lead with three runs in the fourth. Michigan wiggled its way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and tied the game at three in the top of the seventh. Maezes led off the inning with a double to right and moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout to second by Cronenworth.

Coastal took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs with two outs in the inning. The first two Chanticleers reached on walks. A fielder's choice put runners on first and second, and Michigan got a second out on the back end of a stolen base, but a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. An infield single untied the game, and a bases-clearing double to right was the final dagger.

Sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) took the loss on the mound, giving up a run and two hits with a pair of strikeouts and three walks in 1.1 innings. Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) allowed two earned runs and seven hits with a strikeout and two walks in his 4.2-inning start.

Michigan and Coastal Carolina will meet again Saturday afternoon (March 16) at 3 p.m. to continue play in the Chanticleer Classic.
