CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team opened the CC Classic with a 7-3 loss to host Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon (March 16) at Watson Stadium. The Chanticleers put up runs in each of their last five innings after a scoreless three frames.
All three Michigan runs were scored in the top of the seventh inning. Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) reached on an error to start the inning. Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) hit into a fielder's choice, but Brian Pruett's throw was wild and Winger went to third on the error. Junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle), who was 2-for-4 on the night, doubled home Winger to make it 5-1 Coastal. Freshman pinch hitter Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) grounded out to short but drove in Crank for the Maize and Blue's second run. Sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) singled to center to score DiLaura to cut the Chant lead to 5-3, but Michigan did not score the rest of the way, giving CCU the tournament-opening win.
Senior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) did not allow a run in the first three innings, but Coastal scored in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Sloan Gilliam. The Chants got two runs in the fifth on singles from Tucker Frawley and Ted Blackman and plated two more in the sixth on Alex Buccilli's two-run single. Coastal added insurance with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Sinnery was tagged with the loss. He went 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits and five hits with a pair of strikeouts and four walks. Freshman Mike Dolloff (Davison, Mich./Davison) made his first career appearance on the mound, going 2.1 innings and allowing three hits with two runs and a pair of strikeouts. Tyler Herb earned the win, striking out eight in 6.2 innings, while Aaron Burke collected his first save with a strikeout in two innings.
DiLaura was the only Wolverine with multiple hits, while Frawley was 3-for-4 and Buccilli drove in three runs for Coastal.
Michigan continues the CC Classic Saturday (March 17) with two games in two ballparks. Michigan faces UAB Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Pelicans Park in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. at Watson Stadium in Conway, S.C.
