MYRTLE BEACH/CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split its two games at the CC Classic Saturday (March 17) at both the Pelicans Park and Watson Stadium. The Maize and Blue defeated UAB 3-1 in the opener and fell, 6-2, to host Coastal Carolina in the nightcap. Junior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) gave up just two hits in seven innings of work in the win over the Blazers to highlight the day.

Against UAB, the Wolverines scored the game-winning runs in the ninth inning. Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) led off the ninth by taking Ben Bullard's 3-2 pitch over the wall in left field to give the Maize and Blue a 2-1 lead. It was Crank's fourth home run of the season and 27th of his career. Freshman Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) doubled with one out, and with two away, junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) was hit by a pitch. Freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) then hit a grounder to short, but Matt Morse's flip to second was wild, allowing Jacobson to score.

Michigan scored a run in the top of the third as Biondi tripled and scored on Drake's sacrifice fly. UAB tied the game at one in the fifth on Coy Arrowood's run-scoring single.

Ballantine gave up just two hits, including one a bunt single, in seven innings of work. He struck out four and walked four while allowing a run. Freshman Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) earned the win, striking out three and giving up two hits in two innings. Bullard was tagged with the loss despite having 15 strikeouts in 8.2 innings. He gave up seven hits and two earned runs with a walk.

Biondi was 2-for-3 with a run for Michigan against UAB.

In the second game against Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers scored a pair of runs in the first, but the Wolverines responded with a pair in the second. Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) reached on an infield single with one out. He moved to third on a double by senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East). Sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) brought in Winger with an infield single and freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) scored Lorenz with a double to left to tie the game.

Coastal Carolina took the lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Rich Witten. Michigan had the bases loaded in the seventh on a hit-by-pitch, walk and error, but CCU reliever Aaron Burke got a strikeout to end the Wolverine threat.

Sophomore Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) took the loss for U-M. He went 4.2 innings of relief, allowing seven hits and a run with four strikeouts. Fifth-year senior Kolby Wood (Buchanan, Mich./Berrien Springs ) started the game for Michigan, but did not get out of the first, giving up two runs on a pair of hits in a third of an inning. Patrick Corbett earned the win in relief, while Burke recorded his second save for Coastal.

Michigan finishes up the CC Classic this Sunday morning (March 18) against Connecticut. First pitch is at 11 a.m.
