MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) singled up the middle to score sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), breaking a 2-all tie and giving the University of Michigan baseball team a 3-2 win over Akron on the final day of the Chanticleer Classic Sunday morning (March 17) at TicketReturn.com Field.
Michigan scored a pair of runs without the use of a hit in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) walked, and senior/junior Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) was hit to load the bases. Zott hit into a fielder's choice for one run, and the Akron pitcher failed to cover first, allowing Sexton to score.
Akron tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but Michigan took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with some two-out magic. Zott led off the frame with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior/junior John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle). Zott sprinted to third after a flyout by junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and scored the game-winning run when Maezes singled to center.
Sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) earned the win in relief on the mound, giving up a hit and striking out a batter in 2.2 innings. Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) picked up his third save with a strikeout in the ninth. Senior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) struck out five in 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs with a pair of walks.
O'Neill and Cronenworth had two hits apiece to lead the Wolverine offense.
U-M will make the short trek to Eastern Michigan this Wednesday (March 20) for a 3:05 p.m. contest at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti.
