YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) singled home freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th to give the University of Michigan baseball team a 4-3 extra-inning win over Alma in game one of the Oestrike Classic at Oestrike Stadium.

O'Neill, who had four hits on the day, opened the 12th with a triple over Kyle Henris' head. Alma relief pitcher Corey Brohl then walked sophomore Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) and intentionally walked sophomore Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) to load the bases, setting up Lorenz's heroics.

Michigan plated a run in the first as Dennis singled home redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who walked in his first at-bat. Michigan made it 2-0 in the fifth as sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) doubled with one out and scored on an O'Neill single through the left side.

Michigan plated an unearned run in the seventh as Biondi singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored as Toth's fly ball to right was misjudged and dropped by Adam Rezmer. Michigan took a 3-0 lead into the eighth as redshirt sophomore Tyler Mills (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) was putting up zeroes on the mound, but the Wolverines ran into trouble in the eighth. Alex Kravat walked to open the inning. After the Michigan defense retired Kyle Henris, Jay Sackett reached on an infield single, putting runners at first and second with one out. Ryan Henris then singled to leftfield to score pinch runner Craig Brohl. Junior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair, Mich./Lake Shore) came in and struck out Donny Lee but walked Nate Smith and Rezmer to force in a run. Nick Townsend then walked to bring in the tying run in Ryan Henris.

Michigan's best chance to score before the game-winner was in the 10th inning. With one out, Dennis reached on a bunt single, putting junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) at second after Crank reached on a fielder's choice. Lorenz flied out to right for the second out, but redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison) walked to load the bases. Corey Brohl got out of the jam as he induced freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) to ground out to short.

O'Neill was 4-for-6 with a run batted in and a run scored, while Lorenz and Dennis had three hits apiece. Seven different Scots had a hit apiece for Alma. Michigan left 14 runners on base in the 12-inning affair.

Freshman Jake Engels (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) earned his first win at Michigan on the mound. He threw the final 4.1 innings of relief, striking out a pair and allowing just three hits without a run. Mills struck out a career-high eight batters in 7.1 innings. He gave up four hits and three runs with three walks. Corey Brohl was tagged with the loss, giving up a run and six hits in four innings of relief. Alma starter Richard Schrieber struck out five and gave up two earned runs and seven hits in seven innings of work.

Michigan will continue play in the Oestrike Classic on Saturday (March 19) against Oakland University. First pitch at Oestrike Stadium is scheduled for noon.
