MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The University of Michigan baseball team ended its 20-game road trip with a 7-5 win over Connecticut Sunday morning (March 18) on the final day of the CC Classic at Pelicans Park. The Wolverines were trailing heading into the seventh, but U-M plated three runs in the frame and added insurance in the eighth to end the weekend with a 2-2 record.
Michigan trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) opened the inning with a single. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked, and both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield). UConn intentionally walked sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) to load the bases and the Huskies struck out senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) for the second out. However, sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) produced a Texas League single to left that scored all three base runners.
UConn took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run home run from LJ Mazzilli. Michigan answered with two in the bottom of the first. Biondi reached on an infield single and Drake walked. With one out, Crank brought both runners in on a single to left. UConn scored a run in the second for the 4-2 lead it had until the seventh frame.
Michigan allowed a run in the top of the eighth but added insurance in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) walked, moved to second on a Delaney sacrifice bunt and scored as Biondi's grounder was thrown away by pitcher Will Jolin.
Junior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) earned the win on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings of relief, giving up seven hits and a pair of runs with three strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) picked up his first career save after he did not allow a hit and struck out a Huskie in two innings of action. David Fischer was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs in three innings of relief.
O'Neill had two extra-base hits on the day, while Crank and Winger drove in three runs apiece. For UConn, Mazzilli had three runs batted in and joined Alex DeBellis and Ryan Moore with two hits apiece.
Michigan will open its schedule at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, this Friday afternoon (March 23) against IPFW. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
