BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In the league opener, the University of Michigan baseball team opened Big Ten Conference play with a 5-3 loss at Indiana Friday afternoon (March 21) at Bart Kaufman Field. The Wolverines cut the Hoosier lead to one run in the sixth but did not get across another run.

Michigan put the leadoff batter on base the first two innings and had the bases loaded with one out in the second, but it was Indiana that struck first with three runs in the bottom of the second. Casey Smith led off with a double and the Hoosiers had two on after a Will Nolden walk. Fifht-year senior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) retired the next two batters but Casey Rodrigue tripled to right to score a pair. After a walk to Kyle Schwarber, fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) came in and gave up an RBI single to Sam Travis for the third run of the inning.

Indiana took a 4-0 lead in the fifth on Nick Ramos' sacrifice fly. Michigan cut into the IU lead in the top of the sixth. Senior/junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) led off the frame with a double down the left field line. He went to third on a wild pitch. After junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) walked, freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) singled to right to plate Patrick. Freshman Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) then brought in Jusick on a groundout to first base. With Lamb on third and one out, freshman Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) laid down a squeeze bunt that scored the runner, cutting the lead to 4-3. Indiana extended its lead to 5-3 in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice groundout from Rodrigue.

Michigan started a rally in the ninth as sophomores Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) led off the inning with singles, putting runners on the corners. Indiana got a fielder's choice groundout and two strikeouts to end the game.

Maezes had two hits for the Maize and Blue offense. Ballantine took the loss, allowing three runs and two hits with a strikeout and four walks in 1.2 innings. Junior James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) struck out three in 1.2 innings of relief.

Both teams left their share of runners on base. The Wolverines left 11 men on while Indiana had 16 runners left on base.

Michigan and Indiana continue the series Saturday afternoon (March 22) with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch at Bart Kaufman Field.
