ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fought back to tie the game in both the bottom halves of the ninth and 10th innings, but IPFW's Carter DeBoe hit a two-run home run in the top of the 11th that gave the Mastodons an 8-6 win over the Wolverines in U-M's home opener Friday afternoon (March 23) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Michigan started the rally as sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) reached first on a passed ball after a strikeout. Junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) walked with one out and freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) walked to score sophomore pinch runner Adam Robinson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North), cutting the deficit to 5-2. IPFW got the second out, but freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) singled home a pair of runs to make it 5-4. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) tied the game with a single to left to score junior pinch runner Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).
IPFW came back with a run in the 10th on a run-scoring single from Caleb Fenimore, but Michigan bounced back again in the bottom of the frame. Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) tripled over Malcolm White's head in center field. He scored on Delaney's two-out single to left. Freshman Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) looked to have won the game as his liner to left was tailing away from the Mastodon left fielder, but DeBoe was there to make the catch. IPFW then led for good in the 11th on DeBoe's third home run of the year.
The Mastodons scored four runs in the first five innings on separate two-run home runs by Daren Boss and Clay Hathaway. IPFW made it 5-0 on a Fenimore single, but Michigan got a run in the bottom of the sixth. Drake tripled to left and scored on an O'Neill sacrifice fly.
Junior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) picked up the loss, allowing two runs on a pair of hits in the 11th. Classmate Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) started for the Maize and Blue. He allowed four runs and four hits with a career-high seven strikeouts and three walks in five innings. IPFW's Charles Weaver struck out nine in 8.1 innings of work. Steve Danielak earned the win, allowing four hits and two runs with four strikeouts in the final 2.2 innings.
O'Neill led the U-M offense with three hits and two runs batted in. Drake drove in two runs and had a pair of hits. For IPFW, Fenimore and Hathaway had three hits apiece.
Michigan and IPFW continue the three-game series this Saturday (March 24) at 1:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. General admission tickets are $1 for the whole weekend.
