BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) gave the University of Michigan baseball team the lead with a three-run double in the fourth, seven Wolverine pitchers allowed just three runs, and freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) made a great defensive play to preserve the lead in the Maize and Blue's 4-3 win over Indiana Sunday afternoon (March 23) at Bart Kaufman Field.

The first three Michigan batters of the game reached base, giving the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead. Maezes led off with an infield single, went to third on sophomore Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) double, and trotted home on a single to left by junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College). Indiana took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on Casey Rodrigue's two-run single through the right side.

The Wolverines used some two-out magic for three runs in the fourth. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) singled with two away and went to second as junior Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was safe on a throwing error by the Indiana catcher. Junior Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, and Maezes cleared them with a double to right.

Michigan got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth with a double play and again in the fifth as senior Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) induced a groundout to end the threat. Indiana did cut the Maize and Blue's lead to 4-3 in the fifth on an RBI single from Kyle Schwarber.

In the eighth, Indiana put runners on second and third with no one out. Martin picked off Indiana pinch runner Chris Sojka from third base for the first out. After a single put runners on the corners for the Hoosiers, Cronenworth struck out pinch hitter Brad Hartong for the second out. Will Nolden then sent a ball to rightfield that Lamb grabbed on an amazing diving catch for the third out. Cronenworth got Indiana out 1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Cronenworth had three hits on the day, while Maezes, Glines, Martin and Jacobson had two hits apiece for the Wolverines. Maezes also drove in three and scored a run for the Maize and Blue.

Freshman Keith Lehmann (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) earned the win in relief to move to 3-0 on the season. Cronenworth pitched two innings for the save. Junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs with two strikeouts in the start.

Michigan will open its home schedule Wednesday afternoon (March 26) against Western Michigan. First pitch at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, is scheduled for 4 p.m. General admission tickets are just $1 with concession items on sale for just $2.
