ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The pitching quartet of senior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy), freshman Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford), fifth-year senior Travis Smith (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) and freshman James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) combined to allow just one hit in the University of Michigan baseball team's 4-2 win over IPFW Saturday afternoon (March 24) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.

Sinnery went seven innings for the Maize and Blue, allowing just a Kristian Gayday single in the seventh inning. He struck out four and walked four, allowing an unearned run in seven frames for his first win of the season. Szkutnik struck out two in the eighth, while Smith had a punchout and Bourque retired the last two hitters to earn his second save of the year.

Michigan put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked and freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) replaced him after a fielder's choice. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) reached on an infield single and senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought him home on a single through the left side. Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) drove in O'Neill with a single to the gap in left.

After the first, the game turned into a pitcher's duel. The Mastodons scored an unearned run in the fifth as Lucas Salerno's fielder's choice scored Steve Danielak. Michigan answered with some insurance runs in the seventh and eighth frames. In the seventh, Biondi walked, stole second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on back-to-back walks by Lorenz and Crank. Then in the eighth, sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) walked, moved to second on a balk and scored on a Biondi single to center.

Smith struck out Gayday to start the IPFW ninth, but a walk and throwing error put runners on first and second. Bourque came in and hit Salerno to load the bases. Clay Hathaway scored a run on a groundout to third on a tremendous diving stop by Lorenz. Bourque got Daren Boss to fly out to end the game.

Biondi was 2-for-3 with a run batted in for Michigan, while Crank drove in a pair of runs.

Michigan and IPFW will wrap up the three-game series this Sunday (March 25) at 1:05 p.m., at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
