ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior LHP Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) allowed just one hit in six innings of work and the University of Michigan baseball team's offense belted out 16 hits and put up 10 runs in the first five innings as the Wolverines cruised to an 11-3 win over IPFW Sunday afternoon (March 25) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan took two of three games in the 2012 home-opening series against the Mastodons.
Brosnahan struck out four and walked one, giving up just an infield single to Kristian Gayday in the fifth inning. The Ann Arbor native picked up his third win of the year, a day after the Wolverine pitching staff allowed just one total hit to the Mastodons. Fifth-year senior Kolby Wood (Buchanan, Mich./Berrien Springs), freshman Mike Dolloff (Davison, Mich./Davison) and sophomore/freshman Jay Perry (Royal Oak, Mich./U of D Jesuit) pitched the final three innings. Wood and Dolloff struck out a batter apiece, while Perry had two punchouts.
The Wolverine offense got going in the first inning. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) doubled to start the frame, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion), and scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). O'Neill then drove in a run in third with a single to right that scored Biondi.
The U-M offense plated four runs in the fourth. Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He went to third on a double from classmate John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) and scored on a single from junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle). Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) brought in Lorenz with a single to right, and Michigan then made it 6-0 as Biondi doubled home a pair of runs.
Crank and Lorenz started the fifth with back-to-back home runs to left. It was Crank's fifth homer of the year and the second for Lorenz. A wild pitch and an RBI groundout from freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) gave U-M a 10-0 advantage.
Zott brought in Delaney with a single to left in the seventh for an 11-0 advantage. IPFW broke the shutout with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single from Gayday.
Biondi was 4-for-5 for the day with a pair of doubles, runs and RBI. Lorenz was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Zott and Winger had two hits apiece. Gayday had two hits and two RBI for the Mastodons.
Michigan will wrap up the four-game homestand Tuesday (March 27) with a matinee against Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex.
