ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team ran its winning streak to three games with a 6-1 victory over Oakland on Tuesday afternoon (March 27) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Four U-M pitchers combined on a four-hitter and the top three Wolverines in the order combined for five hits and five runs batted in.
Michigan scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) led off the inning with a walk. He traded places with sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) on a fielder's choice. Martin moved to third on a double by junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child). Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) brought both runners home on a single to left field.
Oakland cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth, but the Wolverines answered with some two-out magic in the seventh. Biondi walked with two away. He stole second and scored on a single from freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield).
Michigan added insurance in the eighth with a three-spot. Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) walked to start the inning. He went to third when senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) reached on a fielding error by the Golden Grizzly shortstop. Junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) then executed a bunt back to the Oakland pitcher. He tried to go home, but Lorenz beat the tag and Michigan led 3-1. Martin reached on an infield single with two away and Biondi brought in two runs with a double down the right field line.
Freshman Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) went four innings for the Maize and Blue, picking up his first career win. He struck out three and allowed just one hit with two walks. Freshman Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) earned his second save as he struck out a batter and allowed a hit in two innings of relief. The loss went to Jason Hager, who gave up four hits and two runs with three strikeouts and three walks in six innings.
Biondi went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and a pair of RBI. He also saw a streak of reaching base end at 10 straight at-bats. Drake went 2-for-5 with an RBI and O'Neill had the two-RBI single.
Michigan will make the short trek to Eastern Michigan this Wednesday (March 28). First pitch from Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti is scheduled for 5 p.m., which is a change from the original schedule (was 3 p.m.).
