ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was unable to hold an early two-run lead in a 3-2 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday afternoon (March 28) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Calvin Mathews pitched a complete game for Iowa.

Mathews struck out nine, allowing six hits and two runs in earning his third win of the season. The loss was tagged to fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) in relief. McAnallen allowed a run and four hits in 2.2 innings with a strikeout. Classmate Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) struck out five Hawkeyes and allowed three hits and two runs with a pair of walks in a four-inning start.

The Maize and Blue opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) singled to left with one out. He moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on junior Jackson Glines' (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) groundout. Cronenworth crossed the plate on junior Kyle Jusick's (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) single up the middle. U-M made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI fielder's choice by Glines.

Iowa knotted the game at two in the fourth as a pair of walks came home to score on Tyler Peyton's RBI groundout and a run scoring single by Taylor Zeutenhorst. The Hawkeyes put up the go-ahead run in the fifth as Peyton's single through the right side scored Eric Toole.

Cronenworth had two hits to lead the Michigan offense. Toole, Zeutenhorst and Dan Potempa all had two hits for Iowa.

Michigan continues its three-game series with Iowa on Saturday afternoon (March 29) at 2 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Fans will receive a 2014 Michigan baseball "Team 148" key tag schedule at the gate. It also is Kids Go Blue Club Day at Fisher Stadium.
