MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Eight runs in the first two innings by Minnesota were too much for the University of Michigan baseball team to overcome in a 9-4 road loss on Saturday afternoon (March 31) at the Metrodome.
For the second straight day, Michigan struck first with a run in the top of the first. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked to open the game. He moved to second as freshman Will Drake (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) reached on a bunt single. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) grounded out, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought in Biondi with a groundout to second.
Minnesota put four across in the first that featured a run-scoring double from Kurt Schlangen and run-producing singles by Dan Olinger and Bobby Juan. The Gophers then brought in four more runs in the second on six hits. Schlangen had his second double of the day and Olinger and Juan drove in runs for the second straight frame.
Michigan scored a run in the top of the fourth. Lorenz singled and went to third on a ground-rule double from senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley). He scored as sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) reached on an infield single. The Wolverines plated two in the eighth. Drake, O'Neill and Lorenz all singled to load the bases. Crank brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Martin singled to left to score O'Neill. Minnesota ended the scoring in the bottom of the eighth as JT Canakes scored on a balk.
Drake went 3-for-5 with a run scored at the plate, while Lorenz and Martin had two hits apiece. Martin also drove in a pair of runs. For Minnesota, Schlangen, Olinger, Juan and Michael Handel had two hits apiece.
Senior/junior Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took the loss for the Maize and Blue, giving up 10 hits and eight runs with a strikeout and a walk in 1.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) went 5.2 innings of relief, striking out three and allowing two hits and no runs. DJ Snelten earned the win for the Gophers, striking out four and allowing five hits and two runs in seven innings of work.
