EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored six consecutive runs after trailing 3-0 through four innings and defeated in-state rival Michigan State, 6-3, Friday afternoon (April 5) at McLane Stadium.
Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) led the U-M offensive attack, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) and senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) added two hits apiece.
Sophomore Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) earned the win on the mound, going seven innings and allowing three runs and eight hits with three strikeouts. Senior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth while freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the season.
Michigan State scored a run in the first, stopping U-M's consecutive scoreless innings streak to 20 innings. Ryan Richardson singled to center with one out. He moved to third on a Jordan Keur double to right and scored from Ryan Krill's sacrifice fly. Richardson then brought in two runs in the fourth on a triple to the gap in right, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
Michigan knotted the game at three in the fifth. Freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) walked and moved to second as junior Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) singled. Both runners moved up 90 feet on Martin's sacrifice bunt. With two out, Maezese tripled to the gap in right, scoring both runners. Maezes then scored as the relay throw from second baseman PJ Nowak hit Richardson in the back and got away from the Spartan defense.
The Wolverines took the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh. Martin doubled and Biondi, making his first start since March 10, reached on a bunt single. Maezes brought in Martin on a single to center and Biondi crossed the plate as Cronenworth hit a sacrifice fly to right.
U-M added insurance in the ninth as sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) scored Maezes with a sacrifice fly to left.
Michigan and Michigan State will now play at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, on Saturday afternoon (April 6) at 4:05 p.m.
