ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used a six-run first inning and solid pitching from three Wolverine hurlers to defeat Bowling Green, 13-3, Tuesday night (April 12) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan had its highest scoring output of the season, scoring runs in five of eight innings.

Bowling Green opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first. Sophomore starting pitcher Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) walked Frank Berry to open the game. Andrew Kubuski singled through the right side, and both runners moved up on a two-base error from freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), scoring Berry. Kubuski scored on a sacrifice fly from Clay Duncan. Ballantine struck out two in the inning to hold the deficit to two runs.

Michigan quickly erased that deficit with the six-run first. Sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child), redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central) and O'Neill all singled, scoring a run. Krantz scored on a single from junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) to tie the game at two. A single from redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison) and a double from freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) made it 4-2 Michigan. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Mills (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) drove home the final two runs with a double that went off the outstretched glove of the third baseman.

Bowling Green got a run back in the third on an RBI single from Matt Pitzulo, scoring Kubuski. Michigan answered with a two-run fourth as junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) homered down the leftfield line, scoring O'Neill, who walked in the inning. In the fifth, Michigan scored an unearned run as redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) reached on a dropped fly ball by Alex Davison, scoring Stephens.

The Maize and Blue added insurance in the seventh, plating three runs. Stephens and Lakatos walked to open the inning. Freshman Mac Simotes (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central) singled to right to score Stephens and Krantz brought in a pair of runs with a double to the gap in leftfield. The Wolverines completed the scoring in the eighth on a Lakatos double to left that scored freshman Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia).

Junior Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore) earned the win in relief, pitching four scoreless innings and giving up three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Ballantine went the first three frames, allowing five hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts and a walk. Redshirt senior Matt Gerbe (Shebly Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) pitched the final two innings, striking out a pair.

Lakatos had three hits for U-M, while Biondi, Krantz, O'Neill, and Stephens all had two hits apiece. Krantz, Crank, Lakatos and Mills all had multi-RBI performances.

Kubuski had three hits for the Falcons, while Pitzulo was 2-for-4. The loss was tagged to Ethan McKenney, who allowed eight hits and six runs in three innings of work.
