STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Senior right-handed pitcher Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) pitched a complete game for his third win of the season and the University of Michigan baseball team scored four of its seven runs with two outs as the Wolverines opened a three-game series at Penn State with a 7-3 victory on Friday afternoon (April 13) at Medlar Park at Lubrano Field.

Sinnery allowed just two earned runs and struck out six with 10 hits allowed and one walk in the complete-game effort. It is the fourth complete game of his career, and second of the season, and 11th victory of his career.

Michigan took the early lead with a run in the third. Senior/junior Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central) led off with a walk, went to second on a one-out groundout by junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) and scored on a two-out single from freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade). The Nittany Lions answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third as Joey DeBernardis hit a solo home run off the foul pole in left field to tie the game at one. Jordan Steranka then tripled off the wall in right and scored on a single up the middle by Aaron Novak.

Michigan erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth to take a three-run lead. The Wolverines, who sent nine men to the plate in the fifth, opened the frame on a Biondi walk. He then stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. Delaney walked and Biondi scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley). Sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) scored Delaney with a single to make it 3-2. Freshman Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) was hit by a pitch and senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) walked to load the bases. Krantz came through with a big hit, a single up the middle to score a pair and give Michigan a 5-2 advantage. Penn State came back and scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth on a Steranka sacrifice fly.

Junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) made it 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning as he singled up the middle to score sophomore Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn). A balk helped Michigan score a run in the top of the ninth. Winger singled to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a Zott sacrifice bunt and third on a balk. Winger then scored on a squeeze bunt from Lorenz, making it 7-3 Maize and Blue.

Winger led Michigan's offense with three hits, while Delaney had two. For Penn State, DeBernardis was 3-for-4, while Steve Snyder had two hit. Tim Dunn earned the loss in relief, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings of relief, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Michigan and Penn State continue the three-game series this Saturday (April 14) at 2:05 p.m.
