CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Michigan baseball team picked up a road series win in Big Ten play after defeating Illinois, 4-2, Sunday afternoon (April 13) at Illinois Field. The Wolverines plated a run in both the eighth and ninth innings to break a 2-all tie with the Fighting Illini.
Illinois scored a run in the bottom of the first. Will Krug singled and moved to third on a groundout. Krug scored on a single up the middle from David Kerian. The Wolverines answered with a run in the top of the third. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) opened the inning with a double to left. He moved to third on classmate Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) sacrifice bunt and scored on junior Jackson Glines' (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) sacrifice fly.
The Wolverines took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) that scored Maezes. Illinois came back to tie the game at two on a Reid Roper RBI single in the sixth. Illinois had the bases loaded and one out in that inning, but did not push the go-ahead run across after a strikeout from freshman Brett Adcock (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) and a fielder's choice groundout.
Michigan scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Glines led off with a double to right. He moved up 90 feet on Jusick's sacrifice bunt and scored on senior Cole Martin's (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) game-winning RBI single to left. It was Martin's sixth hit of the series.
The Wolverines added insurance in the ninth. Junior Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) singled to start the inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Lathrup) and scored on Maezes' double to center. Cronenworth retired the Illini in order in the ninth, picking up his seventh save of the year.
Maezes, Glines, Martin and freshman Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) had two hits apiece for the Maize and Blue. Maezes also scored a pair of runs. Adcock picked up the win in relief, striking out a pair in two innings. Cronenworth allowed a hit in the eighth, but picked off the runner at first, one of four pickoffs on the day. Fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) scattered seven hits and allowed a run with two strikeouts in a five-inning start.
Michigan returns to the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, for a midweek matchup with Eastern Michigan Tuesday afternoon (April 15) at 4 p.m.
