ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) pitched six innings of scoreless relief, as the University of Michigan baseball team scored multiple runs in three different innings in an 8-1 win over Penn State Sunday afternoon (April 14) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan has now won nine games in a row and sweeps consecutive Big Ten series for the first time since 2008.
Penn State put up the first run in the first, but the Wolverines answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) singled and moved to third on base hit from junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) singled to right to score Maezes and tie the game. U-M took the lead for good in the third. Maezes walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an O'Neill single. Cronenworth then drove in O'Neill with his second run-scoring single of the game.
In the fourth, senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked, went to third on a Maezes single and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Cronenworth. Maezes came around to score as sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) reached on an error.
Michigan ended the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) singled to lead off the frame. He went to third on a bunt single and throwing error off the bat of sophomore Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius).Martin trotted home on a PSU wild pitch and Jacobson scored on Biondi's sacrifice fly. Maezes then had his third hit of the day, stole second and scored on O'Neill single.
Ogden struck out four and gave up three hits and walked three in six innings of work to move to 5-0 on the year. Junior Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and fifth-year senior Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) each pitched a scoreless frame to complete the sweep.
Maezes went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and reached base four times on the day. O'Neill also had three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Cronenworth was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) went 2-for-3 and reached base four times in the win.
Michigan continues its five-game homestand this Tuesday (April 16) against Notre Dame. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
