ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Illinois' Kevin Johnson threw a complete game and the Fighting Illini scored three times in the third inning and six in the fourth to defeat the University of Michigan baseball team, 9-2, in the opener of a three-game Big Ten series on a windy Friday afternoon (April 15) at the Wilpon Complex.

Johnson struck out eight, giving up six hits and two runs with three walks for the complete-game win. Michigan scored first in the first. Johnson walked sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) to start the inning. Biondi stole second and moved up on a groundout from freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty). Junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) then doubled in the gap in rightfield to score Biondi.

Illinois scored three unearned runs to take a lead it never relinquished. Davis Hendrickson led off with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Thomas Lindauer. After Pete Cappetta walked, Justin Parr moved both runners up on another sacrifice bunt. Chase McMurray hit a foul ball to the first base side, but redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison) dropped it for an error. McMurray then tripled home both runs, giving Illinois a 2-1 lead. McMurray scored on a Crank passed ball, making it 3-1.

In the third, Matt Dittman led off with a home run to right off redshirt sophomore starting pitcher Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who retired the next two batters but gave up a double to Lindhauer and walked Cappetta. Justin Parr brought in Lindhauer with a single. After a McMurray walk, Brandon Hohl cleared the bases with a double, giving Illinois an 8-1 lead. An infield single from Adam Davis brought in Hohl, ending the scoring for the Fighting Illini.

Michigan bought in a run in the seventh as three straight singles from freshman Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn), redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Biondi scored a run.

Justin Parr, Hohl, Davis and Lindhauer had two hits apiece for the Fighting Illini. Brosnahan took the loss, giving up six earned runs and nine hits in 3.2 innings. Redshirt senior Matt Gerbe (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower) struck out three and gave up three hits in 4.1 innings, while redshirt sophomore Matt Broder (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) struck out a pair in the ninth inning.

Weather permitting, game two of the series between Michigan and Illinois will be played this Saturday (April 16) at 3 p.m. If there are any changes in the schedule, they will be posted on MGoBlue.com.
