WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Freshman Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) broke a 6-all tie in the 12th with a run-scoring double, lifting the University of Michigan baseball team to a 7-6 win at Purdue on Friday night (April 18) at Alexander Field.
Michigan opened the 12th with a walk from senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn), who scampered all the way from first as Benedetti doubled down the right-field line. The Boilermakers put a runner on third with two outs after a one-out single, stolen base and groundout, but sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) induced a flyout to end the game.
Freshman Brett Adcock (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) improved to 5-2 on the season, striking out six and allowing just one hit in four innings of relief. Cronenworth earned his Big Ten-leading eighth save of the season with his work in the 12th.
Michigan broke through with some two-out magic to start the scoring in the third. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Cronenworth both walked with two away. They then both came around to score on junior Jackson Glines' (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) second double of the day, this one to the track in right. Purdue got a run back in the bottom of the third on Brandon Krieg's single to left, but U-M answered with a run in the fourth. Martin led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second on a Benedetti single and third on junior Eric Jacobson's (Chicago, Ill/St. Ignatius) sacrifice bunt. Martin scored as Slater's squeeze bunt fell between the Boilermaker's pitcher and first baseman for a hit.
Bendetti put Michigan up 4-1 in the fifth when his single through the right side scored junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central). The Boilermakers scored twice in the sixth as Sean McHugh's double brought in Krieg and Steve Maniago. The Wolverines quickly answered with two runs without the benefit of a hit in the seventh. Cronenworth and Glines walked to open the inning. Jusick reached on an error, scoring Cronenworth. Glines then came home on a double play groundout.
Purdue tied the game at six in the seventh. A Kreig single scored Jeff Evak to cut the lead to 6-4. Maniago scored on a wild pitch, and Purdue tied it as McHugh reached on an error, scoring Krieg.
Benedetti and Glines had three hits and two runs batted in apiece. Cronenworth and Martin each plated a pair of runs in the win.
Michigan and Purdue continue the series tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, April 19) at 2 p.m.
