WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Michigan baseball team exploded for 13 runs and 17 hits, taking a 6-0 lead after three innings and cruising to a 13-3 win at Purdue Sunday afternoon (April 20) at Alexander Field. The Wolverines took 2-of-3 games from the Boilermakers in the Big Ten series.

There were plenty of offensive stars on the day. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) also scored four runs to go with a triple and an RBI. Freshmen Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South), Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Lathrup) and Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) had two hits apiece and senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn), senior/junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) and junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) each had two RBI on the day.

The Maize and Blue also received a quality start on the mound from fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt). McAnallen allowed just five hits and a run with three strikeouts and four walks in seven innings pitched to earn the win. The U-M defense also recorded three double plays on the day in the game's first four innings.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, knocking out Purdue starting pitcher Brett Haan after recording only two outs. Maezes doubled to the track in left. He went to third on a bunt single from Cronenworth. Glines brought in a run with a single up the middle and Benedetti scored Cronenworth on a single to left. Junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) brought in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Michigan made it 5-0 in the second as Maezes walked and scored on Cronenworth's triple to the gap in right field. Glines plated Cronenworth with a groundout to shortstop for the five-run lead. Freshman Trey Miller (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) brought in Slater with a single to center in the third inning to make it 6-0 Wolverines.

The Maize and Blue put a two-spot up in the sixth as Martin's double to the gap in left scored Maezes and Cronenworth. The Boilermakers scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth but the Wolverines came back in a big way, scoring five runs while batting around in the top of the seventh. The big hits in the frame came on a two-run double by Maezes and a two-run single up the middle from Patrick. The Boilermakers ended the scoring with a pair of runs off of three doubles in the eighth.

Michigan returns to the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, to start a five-game homestand this Tuesday afternoon (April 22) against Bowling Green. First pitch is at 4 p.m. General admission tickets and concession will be just $1, while it also will be Student Study Break Day before final exams. [ Promotions ]
