EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used a solid pitching performance from freshman Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) and an inside-the-park home run from freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) to take game one of a doubleheader from Northwestern, 5-0, Sunday afternoon (April 21) at Rocky Miller Park. The Wolverines fell to the Wildcats, 3-2, in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Michigan was retired in order through 2.1 innings, but junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) and sophomore Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) both reached on bunt singles. With two away, Maezes hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run to the corner in rightfield, making it 3-0 Maize and Blue.

Michigan put up a run in the top of the sixth to take a four-run advantage. Maezes walked to open the inning and moved to third on junior Michael O'Neill's (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) 14th double of the year. Maezes trotted home on freshman Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) sacrifice fly to leftfield.

The Wolverines added insurance in the ninth, manufacturing a run after sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) singled, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep).

Hill moves to 7-1 on the year, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) struck out a batter and did not allow a hit in two perfect innings of relief.

Maezes went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in the game-one win. Zott and Martin added two hits apiece.

Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) opened the nightcap with a double to left. He then scored on consecutive groundouts from Maezes and O'Neill. The Maize and Blue made it 2-0 in the third as Maezes singled, stole second and scored on a Cronenworth hit to left.

The score stayed at 2-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Cronenworth came in and gave up back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly cut the lead to 2-1, and a fielding error with two outs tied the game at two. The game went to extra innings, and the Wildcats scored the winning run on a fielding error, splitting the doubleheader.

Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) went seven strong innings, striking out four and allowing four hits and no runs with a pair of walks. Cronenworth was tagged with the loss, allowing one earned run and three hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Five Wolverines had two hits in the game (Biondi, Maezes, Cronenworth, Zott and Martin).

Michigan travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., to face Eastern Michigan Tuesday night (April 23). The Wolverines and Eagles will conclude the suspended game from last Tuesday (April 17) with Eastern leading 4-1 in the bottom of the third. The two teams then will play a seven-inning game.
