BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was unable to overcome a seven-run first from No. 17 Indiana in a 9-1, series-opening road loss on Friday night (April 26) at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Hoosiers sent 13 runners to the plate and had six hits and walked three times in the first.
The Wolverines got a run back in the fourth. Junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) singled to the gap in right and went to second on a walk to freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair). O'Neill then cruised home on sophomore Zach Zott's (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) single to left-center.
However, IU hit solo home runs in the sixth.
O'Neill and Zott had two hits. Sophomore Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs and six hits with three walks and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Fifth-year senior Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs and three hits with a pair of strikeouts and a pair of walks. Indiana's Joey DeNato struck out seven in seven-plus innings of winning work.
Michigan and Indiana continue the three-game series Saturday afternoon (April 27) with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
