BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second straight game of the series, the University of Michigan baseball team fell in an early hole, falling at No. 17 Indiana, 9-3, Saturday afternoon (April 27) at Bart Kaufman Field. The Hoosiers scored three runs in the second inning and six in the third frame to clinch a series win.
Michigan manufactured a run without a hit in the first. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), stole third and scored on a groundout by junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).
The Hoosiers walked three times and used a sacrifice fly and two-run single to take a 3-1 lead in the second. Then in the third, Indiana sent 11 men to the plate, as a two-run single and two-run double highlighted IU's six-run inning.
The Wolverines got a run back in the fourth. Freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) reached on a two-out infield single, Michigan's first hit of the game. Indiana starter Kyle Hart walked sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and gave up a single to right to sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield), scoring Cronenworth. Michigan put up its third run of the game in the sixth as Zott's ground ball to second was fumbled, allowing O'Neill to score.
Cronenworth had two hits on the day, while O'Neill had his Big Ten-leading 15th double of the year. The loss on the mound went to freshman Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant), who allowed seven runs and five hits with a pair of strikeouts and four walks in 2.1 innings. Sophomore Donnie Eaton (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) struck out a pair in three scoreless innings of relief.
The Wolverines and Hoosiers conclude their series Sunday afternoon (April 28) at 1:05 p.m.
