ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team put up three runs in the first and snuffed out an Iowa ninth-inning rally in a 5-4 win Friday night (May 3) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Michigan has now won eight straight games at home.
The Hawkeyes put up a run in the first, but the Wolverines answered with the three runs in the bottom of the frame. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) and junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led off the inning with singles. Biondi scored on base hit through the right side by freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair). With runners at the corners, U-M attempted a double steal. Iowa tried to back pick O'Neill at third, but the throw was wild, allowing both runners to score.
Michigan made it 4-1 in the third on freshman Travis Maezes' (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) third home run of the season, a solo shot to rightfield. The Maize and Blue ended its scoring in the fifth. Sophomore Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) singled with one out. He went to second on Biondi's bunt single. O'Neill followed with an infield single to load the bases. Jacobson trotted home as the Hawkeyes walked Maezes to force in the run.
Iowa came back with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Hawkeyes looked to tie the game as, with a runner on second, Taylor Kaufman singled to left. Sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) came up with the grounder and threw a strike to junior catcher Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn), who put the tag on Jake Yacinich to end the inning.
In the ninth, sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) gave up a leadoff single. A sacrifice bunt and hit-by-pitch followed. The Hawkeyes put runners on second and third after a groundout, but Ogden beared down to strike out Trevor Kenyon to end the game and record his second save of the year.
Sophomore Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) earned his fourth win of the year on the mound, striking out six and allowing five hits, an earned run and three walks in 5.2 innings pitched. Ogden stuck out a pair in 2.1 innings of relief.
Biondi, O'Neill and Jacobson had two hits apiece. The top four in the lineup combined for six hits and three RBI in the win.
The Wolverines and Hawkeyes will continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon (May 4) at 4:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
