EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and did not look back in an 18-6 rout of Northwestern Saturday afternoon (May 3) at Rocky Miller Park. Michigan sets a season high for runs scored as the Maize and Blue evened the series with the Wildcats.

Michigan scored the most runs in an inning since the 2010 season with its first-inning outburst. After a pair of walks opened the contest, junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) brought them home with a three-run home run off the scoreboard in right field. Freshman Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) and senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) followed with singles and senior/junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) plated them after a double to the gap in right.

Junior Dominic Jamett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and junior Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) then singled to give Michigan a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) singled to right to score two more runs, and Glines' groundout gave the junior his fourth RBI of the inning, scoring sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and giving U-M a 9-0 lead.

The Wolverines scored an unearned run in the second, but Northwestern fought back with four runs in the third. The big hit was a three-run double to left by Scott Heelan. Joe Hoscheit added an RBI groundout for the Wildcats in the third frame.

The Maize and Blue made it 12-4 in the fifth on Patrick's third home run of the season, a solo shot to left, and a run-scoring single from Cronenworth that brought in Maezes. White belted the Wolverines' third home run of the day as his solo shot made it 13-4 in the seventh inning.

Michigan batted around in the eighth, scoring five runs. Cronenworth and Glines both scored on freshman Hector Gutierrez's (Detroit, Mich./Western International) two-run pinch-hit single. Jamett drove in a run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Maezes brought in a pair with a single to right.

Junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) earned the win on the mound. He went seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out five and walking three.

All nine staters and 11 hitters in all had at least one hit for the Maize and Blue. Cronenworth and Martin had three hits apiece, while Maezes, Patrick and White each collected two hits. Glines drove in four runs, and Patrick had three RBI.

Michigan and Northwestern will wrap up the three-game series Sunday (May 4) at 1 p.m. CDT at Rocky Miller Park in Evanston, Ill.
