IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Senior Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out eight, and senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) hit two home runs and drove in five as the University of Michigan baseball team blanked Iowa, 11-0, Friday night (May 4) at Duane Banks Field.
Sinnery was outstanding for the second straight season against the Hawkeyes. The senior allowed just six hits and only one walk, which came in the ninth inning, for his fourth win of the season. It also was Michigan's second shutout of the season, with the first coming in a 4-0 win over Michigan State on April 6.
Michigan used some two-out magic to score a run in the first. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), playing in his first game since April 4, singled to left, stole second and scored on classmate Brett Winger's (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) single off Iowa pitcher Jared Hippen. Michigan added a pair of runs in the second. Freshman Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) hit his third home run in as many games, this one over the wall in left field. With two outs, junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) reached on an error, stole second and third, and scored on a single from junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle).
The Maize and Blue scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Biondi opened the inning with a bunt single. It looked as if he would be picked off as he was caught in a rundown, but the pitcher did not cover first and Biondi was safe at first base. Then on DiLaura's walk, Biondi went to second and advanced to third on an error by catcher Keith Brand. O'Neill scored Biondi on a single through the left side and senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) brought in DiLaura and O'Neill on his Big Ten-leading 10th home run of the season, making it 7-0 Wolverines.
Crank went deep for the second time in the top of the seventh, scoring Winger, who led off the inning with a single. It was Crank's 34th career home run, putting him third by himself on Michigan's career home run list. The Wolverines added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) singled down the right-field line to score freshman Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) and O'Neill.
Crank reached base all five times, going 3-for-3 with a pair of runs and five runs batted in. O'Neill added three hits and three runs scored, while Lorenz, White and Winger had two hits apiece. Michigan had 14 hits for the third straight game while taking advantage of four Hawkeye errors.
Michigan and Iowa will now play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (May 5) at 12:05 p.m. CDT due to the weather forecast in Iowa City on Sunday.
