MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- The pitching staff recorded 14 strikeouts and allowed just three hits as the University of Michigan baseball team bested Central Michigan, 7-1, Tuesday afternoon (May 6) at Theunissen Stadium.
Sophomore Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) pitched four hitless innings in his start to earn the win on the mound. Hill struck out five and walked just one Chippewa. Junior Donnie Eaton (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) had a pair of strikeouts in an inning, while freshman Mac Lozer (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) had three punchouts in two innings of work. Freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) had four strikeouts in the final two innings, including the game-ender.
The Wolverines put up a run in the top of the second inning. Junior Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) reached on an error with one out. He moved to second on junior Eric Jacobson's (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) walked and the Maize and Blue loaded the bases on classmate Jacob Cronenworth's (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) infield single. Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) plated the run with a bases-loaded walk. Jacobson brought in senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) with a sacrifice fly in the third and junior Dominic Jamett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett) plated a pair in the fourth with a single through the left side, giving the Wolverines an early 4-0 lead.
Michigan pushed the lead to 5-0 in the eighth as freshman Carmen Benedetti's (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) groundout scored freshman Hector Gutierrez (Detroit, Mich./Western International). The Wolverines added insurance in the ninth. Jamett singled for his third hit of the game. Junior pinch runner Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) then scored on a double down the line by White. Jacobson scored White with a squeeze bunt to make it a 7-0 advantage. Central scored its lone run in the ninth on an RBI infield single by Morgan Oliver.
Jamett recorded a career high with three hits on the day and also drove in a pair. Cronenworth and Benedetti had two hits apiece in the win. The Wolverines walked 10 times in the contest.
U-M will start a seven-game homestand tomorrow (Wednesday, May 7) against Oakland. First pitch is at 4 p.m. and admission is free for the contest.
