ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team could not overcome a five-run Texas Tech first in an 8-2 loss on Tuesday night (May 10) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The Red Raiders scored all of their runs in the first four innings in U-M's first game against a Big 12 team in Ann Arbor since 1980.
The Red Raiders' Jamodrick McGruder led off the game with a walk off redshirt sophomore Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). He moved to second on a Reid Redman single. Barrett Barnes loaded the bases on a bunt single and Stephen Hagen brought in a pair with a single to left. A Kelby Tomlinson bunt single loaded the bases again and with one out, Nick Popescu unloaded them with a double to the gap in leftfield.
Michigan answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led off the inning with a single. He stole second and moved to third on a groundout off the bat of sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child). Junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) brought O'Neill home on a sacrifice fly to left.
In the top of the third, the Red Raiders scored a run with two outs. Popescu singled and stole second. On the steal, he went to third on a throwing error from freshman Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn). Popescu scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1.
Texas Tech plated a pair of runs in the fourth. Freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) retired the first batter he saw but walked the next three Red Raiders to load the bases. Redman scored on a fielder's choice and Texas Tech used a double steal as Barnes scored to make it 8-1.
Michigan scored the game's final run in the sixth. Biondi reached on a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error from catcher Mason Rudolph. Biondi went to third and scored on groundouts, the latter off the bat of redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central).
Popescu had three hits and three runs batted in to lead Texas Tech, while Barnes had two hits and scored a pair of runs. For Michigan, Biondi was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Brosnahan gave up six hits and five earned runs with a strikeout and three walks in three innings, taking the loss. Lakatos went four innings of relief, allowing two hits, two runs and four walks with three strikeouts. Sophomore Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) struck out three in the final two innings of work.
The win went to Duke von Schamann, who gave up a run and two hits and struck out a batter in three innings. Brennan Stewart and Aaron Corwin did not allow an earned run in six innings of relief.
The two teams will wrap up the two-game midweek series Wednesday night (May 11) at 6:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex.
