ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second straight day, the University of Michigan baseball team broke a tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. This time, the Wolverines put up five runs in that frame and went on to win 10-6 over Purdue Saturday afternoon (May 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.

Michigan held a 5-0 lead through six innings, and freshman Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) had not given up a hit on the mound, but the Boilermakers put up five runs in the top of the seventh to tie the contest. Sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) then led off the eighth with a walk. Senior pinch runner Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) moved to third on a slash double by sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central). After a strikeout, freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) popped up a bunt, but it was dropped by Purdue's Brad Schreiber and Biondi scored. That opened the floodgates as freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) singled home a run, Sexton scored on a balk, and junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) smashed a two-run home run over the wall in leftfield.

The Maize and Blue scored a run in each of the first two innings. In the first, O'Neill reached on an error by the shortstop, went to third on a failed pickoff and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair). White doubled to open the second, went to third on an error by Purdue's rightfielder and scored on Jusick's groundout.

Michigan put up another run in the fourth on junior Cole Martin's (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) single that scored sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion). The Maize and Blue scored twice in the bottom of the fifth. Maezes reached on a one-out single. He stole second and third and scored on O'Neill's single. O'Neill stole second and third and came home on a throwing error by the Purdue catcher. The game featured nine errors, seven by Purdue and two from Michigan.

Maezes had three hits and scored a pair of runs, while O'Neill drove in three, scored three and had two hits. Jusick also had two hits, while the Maize and Blue stole five bases on the day.

Sophomore Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) picked up the win in relief for the second straight day. He allowed a run and four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 2.1 innings. Hill gave up four hits and five runs with four strikeouts and six walks in 6.1 innings.

The Wolverines and Boilermakers conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon (May 12) at 1:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game also is the final home game of 2013 for the Maize and Blue and is Senior Day. U-M will recognize seniors Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa), Biondi, Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) before the game.
