ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Brett Adcock (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) continued the trend of solid starting pitching on the weekend by striking out a career-high seven while allowing just two hits and no runs in eight innings as the University of Michigan baseball team earned a series win over Ohio State with a 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon (May 11) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Adcock, making his third career start, struck out Ohio State's first two hitters on six pitches and did not look back. He scattered four walks but allowed just one runner to reach third base. He got out of that first and third, two-out jam in the sixth with a strikeout of Josh Dezse. Junior James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) pitched the ninth for the Maize and Blue, striking out a batter while allowing a hit and a run.
Michigan's starting pitching allowed just one run in 24.2 innings in the Ohio State series. Adcock also earned his team-high seventh win in 2014.
The Wolverines scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second frame. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on junior Kyle Jusick's (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) single to right. After a double play moved Martin to third, he scored on junior Dominic Jamett's (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett) single to center. Junior Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) followed that hit with a single of his own. Sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) reached on an error to load the bases, and Jamett scored on a wild pitch.
The Maize and Blue made it 3-0 in the third by using some two-out magic. Martin singled and scored on a double to right by Jusick. Michigan extended its lead to 4-0 in the fourth. With one out, Maezes doubled to right. He went to third on sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) single and scored on junior Jackson Glines' (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City College) squeeze bunt to the pitcher. Ohio State escaped the shutout with a ground-rule RBI double by Patrick Porter in the top of the ninth, but Bourque induced a groundout from Aaron Gretz to end the game.
Jacobson had three hits on the day, while Cronenworth, Martin and Jusick had two hits apiece for the Wolverines. Martin scored a pair of runs as Michigan now has won eight of its last 10 contests.
