ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Purdue scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 12-9 win over the University of Michigan baseball team on Senior Day at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan held a 9-8 lead going into the top of the final frame as sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) struck out the first Purdue batter to begin the inning. A single was followed by a groundout, and a walk put runners on first and second. Jack Picchiotti was down 0-2 in the count, but singled up the middle to score a run. A walk was followed by a three-run double to give the Boilermakers the final three-run advantage.
Purdue scored first in the contest, with three runs in the top of the second inning. The Wolverines got one back in the bottom of the frame as an attempted double steal scored sophomore Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion). Michigan then tied the game in the fifth as freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) singled to start the frame. He went to second as senior Patrick Biondi's (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) bunt was thrown away at second by Purdue pitcher Kyle Wood. U-M loaded the bases as junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) singled. Freshmen Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair) each drove in a run on a groundout to tie the game at three.
Purdue and Michigan each scored five runs in the sixth inning. A Sean McHugh grand slam accounted for four of the Boilermakers' five runs. In the bottom of the inning, singles from junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) and sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) was followed by a Sexton RBI single. Biondi drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Cronenworth scored a pair with a single to left. A wild pitch brought in Maezes with the inning's final run.
The Maize and Blue took the lead in the seventh. Sophomore Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) doubled and moved to third on a groundout. Martin followed with a liner that was dropped, creating a 9-8 U-M lead.
O'Neill, Cronenworth and Sexton had two hits apiece for the Wolverines, while Cronenworth drove in three runs. Bourque was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning. Senior/junior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) made the start, allowing seven hits and five runs with a strikeout and two walks in 5.2 innings.
