WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used timely hitting and great pitching from the duo of junior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) and senior/junior Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in a 4-3 upset win at No. 15 Purdue on Sunday afternoon (May 13) at Lambert Field.
Michigan executed a weird double play to end the contest. The Wolverines held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Purdue's David Miller was hit by a pitch and Andrew Dixon walked to open the inning. Stephen Talbott then moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. Tyler Spillner's pop up was corralled by Brosnahan, who dropped it on the transfer. Miller, thinking he dropped the pop up, went home and was tagged out at the plate ending the game.
Purdue opened the scoring in the second as Dixon singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Talbott single. Michigan answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) belted a one-out home run over the wall in right field. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) then walked with two out, stole second and scored on a single to right field by senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley). Purdue tied the game at two in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Plawecki.
In the top of the fourth, freshmen Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) reached on one-out singles. Freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) then laced a double to the gap in left, scoring White. Biondi then brought in Zott with a squeeze bunt that was bobbled by Purdue pitcher Blake Mascarello, giving U-M a 4-2 lead.
The Boilermakers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Plawecki single that scored Cameron Perkins. Purdue had a runner in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings, but Brosnahan got out of both jams to keep the lead at 4-3.
Ballantine went the first six innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with a pair of strikeouts and no walks. Brosnahan earned the save, allowing two hits and a walk in three innings of work. The loss was tagged to Connor Podkul as he gave up four hits and four runs with three strikeouts and two walks in 3.1 innings.
Biondi drove in two runs to lead Michigan's offense, while Perkins was 3-for-3 and Dixon had two hits for the Boilers.
Michigan will play its final midweek game of 2012 this Tuesday (May 15) at Western Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
