KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team was unable to overcome Western Michigan's nine-run first inning in a 13-6 road setback on Tuesday afternoon (May 15) at Bobb Stadium at Hyames Field. The game was the final road game for the Wolverines in the 2012 season.

Western Michigan had nine hits in its nine-run first. The first four Broncos all reached base on hits. After a groundout, Jared Kujawa singled home a run, making it 4-0. A Michigan error brought in two more runs, making it 6-0. A strikeout was followed by four hits and a walk, giving WMU the early 9-0 advantage.

Michigan put up its first run in the second. Senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) was hit by a pitch to start the frame. He moved to third on a double from sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior/sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle). Western came back with a run in the bottom of the second on Andrew Sohn's first home run of the season.

Michigan scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) led off the inning with a single up the middle. Crank and Winger then walked to load the bases. Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) hit a chopper to WMU pitcher Mike Moyer, whose throw home was wide, scoring a pair of runs. DiLaura then grounded to short to score Winger.

Kujawa brought in Jack Scanlon with a single in the sixth. Michigan scored a run in the seventh on junior Patrick Biondi's (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) single to left-center. WMU scored two in the bottom of the seventh on a Scanlon triple and Michigan ended the scoring in the eighth with a run on freshman Zach Zott's (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) double down the line in right.

O'Neill, Zott, Winger and freshman Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) had two hits apiece for the Maize and Blue. For Western Michigan, Scanlon was 4-for-5 with five runs batted in, while Ryan McMillan had three hits and three RBI.

Junior Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) took the loss for Michigan. He allowed four earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Freshman Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) struck out five and allowed six hits and three earned runs in 4.2 innings of relief. Chris Bossenbery picked up the win for the Broncos, allowing three hits and a run in four innings of work.

Michigan will get ready for its final series of the season this weekend. The Wolverines host Nebraska Thursday night (May 17) at 6:05 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
