ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind senior Brandon Sinnery's (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) fifth complete game of the season -- in his final start as a Wolverine -- and three runs in the seventh inning, the University of Michigan baseball team picked up a 6-5 win over Nebraska on Friday night (May 18) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Sinnery went the distance to pick up his fifth win of the season. He allowed nine hits and five runs with four strikeouts. It was Sinnery's fourth complete game in Big Ten play and seventh in his four-year career. He ends his U-M career with 13 wins and 164 strikeouts in 260 innings pitched.
Sinnery and Nebraska's Ryan Hander put up zeroes in the first three innings. This included a great play from freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) in the third to keep the game scoreless. The Cornhuskers put up four runs in the top of the fourth. Josh Scheffert led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Nebraska put runners on the corners with two outs and executed a double steal to take a 1-0 lead. A Cory Burleson single was followed by a three-run home run from Pat Kelly.
Michigan came right back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and senior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) walked to start the inning. Both those runners scored on a double from sophomore Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia). Winger moved to third on a single from freshman Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and scored on a double play by freshman Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius).
Nebraska scored a run in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice from Rich Sanguinetti. Michigan then took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Delaney and junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) both drew one-out walks. Senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought in a run with a single to right. With runners on second and third, O'Neill brought in a run on a groundout and Crank plated the game-winning run on a single through the left side.
Winger drove in a pair of runs for the Maize and Blue. For Nebraska, Scheffert and Burleson had two hits apiece.
Michigan will conclude the 2012 season Saturday afternoon (May 19) against Nebraska. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Michigan will honor its six seniors starting at 12:40 p.m.
