ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell, 7-3, to Nebraska in its 2012 season finale Saturday afternoon (May 19) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Nebraska got on the board first with a run in the top of the second as Richard Stock belted his fourth home run off the scoreboard in right field. The Huskers added a run in the third as Michael Pritchard drove in a run on a bunt single.
The score stayed at 2-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Maize and Blue used some two-out magic. Freshman Dylan Delaney (Woodland Hills, Calif./Chaminade) struck out with two outs, but reached base on a wild pitch. Junior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) followed that with a single and senior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) brought both runners home with a triple to the gap in left field. Sophomore Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) then doubled down the left-field line, scoring Lorenz and giving Michigan a 3-2 lead.
However, Nebraska scored the game-winning runs in the eighth. Pritchard opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Stock's sacrifice fly tied the game at three. A walk and single put runners on the corners and Kash Kalkowski's single brought in the game-winning tally. Rich Sanguinetti made it 5-3 on a throwing error. The Huskers added insurance in the ninth with a pair of runs on a Stock RBI single and a throwing error.
Lorenz had two hits and drove in a pair of runs in his last game in a Michigan uniform. For Nebraska, Stock had two hits and three RBI.
Senior/junior Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) took the loss for Michigan, allowing an earned run a third of an inning. Junior Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) started for the Wolverines, allowing two runs and five hits with a strikeout in 6.2 innings. Tom Lemke picked up the win in relief, striking out three in 2.1 innings. Dexter Spitsnogle struck out six and gave up three runs and six hits in 6.2 innings for the Huskers in a start.
Before the game, Michigan honored its six seniors, Lorenz, Brandon Sinnery (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy), Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley), Kevin Vangheluwe (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeshore), Travis Smith (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) and Kolby Wood (Buchanan, Mich./Berrien Springs).
