ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team concluded its 2011 season with an 11-8 loss to Penn State on Saturday afternoon (May 21) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game was televised on the Big Ten Network.

Michigan put up two runs in the bottom of the fourth to open the scoring. Junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) walked to open the inning. Junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) then reached on a throwing error. Both runners moved up a base on a failed pickoff attempt and both scored on a single to right from freshman Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia).

Penn State took the lead for good with a six-spot in the top of the fifth and plated two more runs in the sixth. PSU then made it 9-2 in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Michigan fought back in the final two innings, plating five runs in the eighth. Freshman Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) opened the inning with a single to left. He moved to second on a single by redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central). With runners on the corners, Penn State reliever Nick Pierce hit redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison), loading the bases. Freshman Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) then hit a grounder to second, but the throw was wild, scoring a pair of runs. Sophomore Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) singled to left to bring in Stephens, making it 9-5. Crank loaded the bases with a single and Lorenz followed with a fielder's choice that scored O'Neill. Another Penn State error on a ground ball from sophomore Derek Dennis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) scored Biondi to make it 9-7. However, Nittany Lion reliever Heath Johnson struck out Martin to end the inning.

Two big insurance runs in the top of the ninth for the Nittany Lions made it 11-7.

U-M again battled back in the ninth. Krantz singled and redshirt sophomore John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) walked to start the inning. O'Neill hit a one-out single to right to score Krantz, but Greg Welsh struck out Biondi and Crank to end the game.

Four Wolverines -- O'Neill, Crank, Winger and Krantz -- had two hits apiece for U-M, while O'Neill and Winger had a pair of runs batted in.

Redshirt senior starting pitcher Matt Gerbe (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower), in his last outing as a Wolverine, took the loss for the Wolverines, allowing four hits and four runs with a career-high five strikeouts and a walk in 4.1 innings of work.

The two Wolverine seniors, Gerbe and redshirt senior Anthony Toth (Lorain, Ohio/St. Ignatius), were honored before the game as part of the Senior Day festivities.
