ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the 13th frame to take an 8-5 victory over the Ontario Blue Jays Tuesday night (Oct. 9) in the teams' annual 14-inning exhibition at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan put a run up in the first. Senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) doubled to lead off the frame. He stole third and scored on a groundout to second from freshman Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer). The Blue Jays put up a run in the top of the second and scored twice in the fifth to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Maize and Blue came back to tie the game at three in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was hit by a pitch and Maezes walked to open the inning. Both runners stole a base, with O'Neill scoring on a throwing error by the Blue Jay catcher. Freshman Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) then singled to the gap in left, scoring Maezes. Michigan took the lead in the 11th on a run-scoring fielder's choice from O'Neill.
Ontario took the lead with two runs in the top of the 12th, but the Wolverines answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the 13th. Sophomore Eric Jacobson (Chicago, Ill./St. Ignatius) walked and moved up on a passed ball. Biondi walked to put runners on first and second. O'Neill tried to sacrifice both runners up 90 feet, but the third baseman pumped to first, then threw wild to third, scoring Jacobson. Freshman Matthew Dacey (Wyckoff, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) was intentionally walked to load the bases and sophomore Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) came through with a single up the middle to give the Wolverines the 6-5 lead. Sophomore Dominic Jamett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and senior/junior John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLa Salle) both brought in runs with bases-loaded walks.
Biondi had three hits to lead U-M, while Sexton and junior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) had two hits apiece. On the mound, senior/junior Logan McAnallen (Dewitt, Mich./Dewitt) struck out three in two innings of work, while sophomore James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) threw two hitless innings to start the contest.
Michigan will wrap up fall practice with a three-game Maize and Blue World Series. Game one will be on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
