YPSILANTI, Mich. - The University of Michigan baseball team started its annual Maize and Blue World Series Saturday morning (Oct. 26) as the Maize team defeated the Blue 3-1 at Oestrike Stadium to open the best-of-three series.

The Blue team struck first in the top of the third. Freshman Hector Gutierrez (Detroit, Mich./Western International) singled and moved to second as classmate Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) reached on a walk. Both runners moved up 90 feet on a passed ball and Gutierrez scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Fresno City C.C.).

The Maize team took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of walks to sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) was followed by a wild pitch. Both runners scored on a double to right from freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford). The Maize team added insurance in the seventh as junior Kevin White (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) scored Lamb on a sacrifice fly to the shortstop.

Freshman Brett Adcock (Kawkawlin, Mich./Bay City Western) earned the win on the mound for the Maize team. He pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and an unearned run with three strikeouts and a walk. Lamb earned the save with a strikeout in an inning's work. Fifth-year senior Logan McAnallen (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) struck out a pair in four innings for the Blue team, while classmate Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) had two strikeouts in three innings pitched.

The Maize team had three hits in the win, with Lamb, junior Dominic Jamett (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) and senior/junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) each added one apiece. Gutierrez had a pair of hits to lead the Blue team.

The Maize and Blue World Series continues Sunday morning (Oct. 27) at 10 a.m. on the campus of Siena Heights University in Adrian, Mich.
