ADRIAN, Mich. -- Freshman Keith Lehmann's (Western Spring, Ill./Lyons Township) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh gave the Blue team a 4-3 win over Maize in game two of the University of Michigan baseball program's Maize and Blue World Series Sunday morning (Oct. 27) at The Diamond on the campus of Siena Heights University.
Junior Zach Zott (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) started the bottom of the seventh with a single to right and moved to second on a groundout by freshman Carmen Benedetti (Grosse Pointe, MIch./South). Zott stole third during an intentional walk to freshman Hector Gutierrez (Detroit, Mich./Western International) and scored on the Lehmann sacrifice fly.
The Maize team struck first with a run in the fourth. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) had a one-out single and went to second on a groundout. He stole third on junior Dominic Jamett's (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./University Liggett School) walk. Senior/junior Kendall Patrick (Mitchell, S.D./Blackhawk College) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and freshman Trey Miller (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) brought in a run on a bases-loaded walk.
The Blue team answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Jackson Glines (Coarsegold, Calif./Yosemite) singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Sophomore Jack Sexton (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./Fordham Prep) singled home senior Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) to give Blue a 2-1 lead, and Sexton plated Blue's third run, scoring on a passed ball.
The Maize team tied the score at three in the top of the fifth as freshman Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) doubled in sophomore Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and junior Kyle Jusick (Portage, Mich./Portage Central).
Junior James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) struck out four and allowed two hits in 3.2 innings in a start. Lehmann earned the win on the mound, allowing a hit and striking out a batter in 2.2 innings. Sophomore Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) had a pair of strikeouts in 3.2 innings for the Maize team.
The Maize and Blue World Series will conclude with a winner-take-all game three Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 30) at 4 p.m. at Easter Michigan University's Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
