ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program announced today (Tuesday, Jan. 15) that senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) has been selected as captain by his teammates for the 2013 season. Biondi is the fourth Wolverine to be a two-time captain since 2000, joining Kolby Wood, Leif Mahler and Bryce Ralston.

Biondi, who was a unanimous selection by his teammates for captaincy, was an All-Big Ten second team selection in 2012 as he hit .303 with 11 doubles, three triples, a pair of home runs and a Big Ten-leading 32 stolen bases. He led the Wolverines in stolen bases, hits (67), runs scored (44) and on-base percentage (.408). Biondi also had a team-leading 18 multi-hit games and four multi-RBI performances. He is just three stolen bases away from breaking Michigan's all-time record as he enters 2013 with 88 thefts at U-M.

Biondi also is part of the Wolverines' Leadership Council that includes seniors Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) and Kyle Clark (Portage, Mich./Portage Central), fifth-year senior Chad Jasman (Bay City, Mich./Western) and junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).

Ballantine started 15 games for the Wolverines on the mound in 2012, going 2-3 with a 3.98 earned-run average and 41 strikeouts. He went at least seven innings in his first three starts and earned the win at No. 15 Purdue on May 13, allowing just one earned run in six innings of work. Clark appeared in 15 games on the mound for U-M last year, going 2-4 with 22 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched. He earned the win against Connecticut on March 18, striking out three in 6.1 innings of relief.

Jasman, who was an Academic All-Big Ten performer, made four appearances out of the bullpen for Michigan, striking out three batters, including one apiece in conference games against Penn State (April 14) and Nebraska (May 17). O'Neill led U-M in batting average (.327), slugging percentage (.525) and doubles in 2012. He was fifth in the Big Ten with 19 stolen bases as well as sixth in the league in slugging percentage. He has six home runs in Michigan's first 15 games and had 16 multi-hit performances.

Michigan opens its 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15, at California. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PST in Berkeley, Calif.
