SOPHOMORES HIGHLIGHTED IN BASEBALL AMERICA PREVIEW: Baseball America came out with its 2014 Big Ten Conference preview along with the top-10 prospects for this year's draft and the top five for the 2015 draft. Junior Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) was named BA's 10th-best Big Ten prospect in the 2014 draft. Sophomore Evan Hill (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) is the Big Ten's best 2015 prospect and the 49th-best sophomore in the country, according to the publication. Classmate Travis Maezes (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) was named the third-best Big Ten prospect in the 2015 draft.
The preview also highlighted Hill, Maezes and sophomore Jacob Cronenworth (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair), calling Maezes and Cronenworth players who have "athleticism, physicality, toughness and savvy." They also say Hill has a chance to be an outstanding Friday starter.
MAEZES MAKES PERFECT GAME'S ALL-BIG TEN TEAM: Maezes also was selected to the Preseason All-Big Ten team by Perfect Game USA. In their preview, Michigan was picked to finish fourth in the conference. The website also had a prospect watch, as junior James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), Szkutnik and junior Matt Ogden (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) were named to the top 25 for the 2014 draft and Hill was on the top 10 in the 2015 prospect list.
COLLEGE BASEBALL INSIDER NAMES MARTIN TOP DEFENSIVE CATCHER IN B1G: The website CollegeBaseballInsider.com surveyed the head coaches in the Big Ten about the top players in the conference. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) was named the Big Ten's best defensive catcher. Martin started and caught in 54 of Michigan's 56 games last season and threw out 22 runners, a conference best in 2013.
