WICHITA, Kan. -- University of Michigan baseball senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) has been named to the 2014 Johnny Bench Award watch list, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced today (Thursday, March 6). The Johnny Bench Award is given annually to the top NCAA Division I collegiate catcher.
An All-Big Ten third team selection in 2013, Martin has played in 150 career games with 116 starts for the Maize and Blue. He started 54 games behind the plate last season, hitting .246 with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 22 runs batted in. Martin also threw out a Big Ten Conference-best 23 runners trying to steal his junior season. Martin has a .301 career on-base percentage with 85 hits, eight doubles and 40 RBI. This season, Martin hit a home run in the Washington game (Feb. 14) and had two hits in the Air Force win (Feb. 15).
The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, who will be announced May 15. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists, who will will be announced June 3. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 17th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 26.
Michigan will open a four-game series against Princeton with a single game Friday afternoon (March 7) at 1 p.m. at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
