ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney announced the addition of C Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) and RHP Jonathon Perry (Royal Oak, Mich./U of D Jesuit) to the 2010 recruiting class.
Martin, a two-sport athlete out of John Glenn High School, led Midland Berryhill to the 2009 American Legion World Series Championship. En route to the championship, Martin was named the Great Lakes Region Most Valuable Player. Martin hit .414 with 39 runs batted in as a junior en route to first team all-conference and all-district honors.
"Cole Martin is a really good athlete. He's got a good arm and could potentially fill in as a utility player, but he's a catcher with a decent bat. Just the makings of a good all-around athlete, and we want to have as many athletes in our program as possible. We think if you're really athletic you have a chance to find your niche," said Maloney. "He's also a hockey goalie, and I like that toughness. We've had success with guys who have been multi-sport guys, especially hockey players at both Ball State and at Michigan. Cole will fit into that really well."
Perry, a prep standout from the University of Detroit Jesuit, led his team in earned run average, innings pitched, wins and strikeouts as a junior last spring. He is a big game pitcher, owning a one-hitter in the 2008 regional semifinal and a two-hit complete game to clinch a 2009 regional championship.
"We think [Perry] is very projectable, has a nice loose arm, the makings of a good breaking pitch and comes from an outstanding school and a good baseball program. We are really excited about his upside and him participating in our program," Maloney said.
The two join a 2010 recruiting class that features RHP Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), OF Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), IF Mark Bass (Pace, Fla./Pace), RHP Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and OF Adam Robinson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North).
"With the guys we already have signed its going to be a gritty class -- one of toughness, which we always need to keep moving in that direction with guys who are confident in themselves and who have something to prove, and good students as well as athletes," commented Maloney on the 2010 recruiting class. "We are excited to have Cole and Jonathon join the rest of our class, which we think will do a great job here at Michigan."
The Wolverines travel to Conway and Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Caravelle Resort Classic, featuring Ball State, Lipscomb and No. 10-ranked Coastal Carolina this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First game is Friday (March 12) against Ball State at 1 pm.
