Quartet of Signees Picked on Final Day of MLB Draft

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- University of Michigan signees Jackson Lamb (Temperance, Mich./Bedford), Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich./Southfield-Lathrup), Ramsey Romano (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla) and Harrison Wenson (Farmington Hills, Mich./U of D Jesuit) were selected on the third and final day of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Saturday afternoon (June 8).

Lamb, an outfielder/right-handed pitcher, was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 20th round (610th overall pick), while Slater, an outfielder/left-handed pitcher, went to the Atlanta Braves in the 31st round (943rd overall). Romano, an infielder, was pegged by the Chicago Cubs in the 35th round (1038th overall) and Wenson, a catcher, was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 38th round (1146th overall).

Lamb, the Gatorade Michigan High School Baseball Player of the Year, is a two-time All-Michigan selection and was hitting .519 with four home runs and was 5-0 with a 1.48 earned-run average on the mound for the Kicking Mules heading into the postseason. Lamb has helped Bedford to the state quarterfinals.

Slater, who is 17th on Michigan Baseball Prospects' Class of 2013 rankings, earned Rawlings Central Region honorable mention in 2013 at Southfield Lathrup. He also hit .576 as a junior for the Chargers.

Romano hit .356 with seven doubles, two triples, two home runs and had two saves on the mound for Valhalla High School his senior year. He also was named a Rawlings California Region honorable mention.

Wenson has helped U of D Jesuit to the state quarterfinals and will join Lamb and Slater in the MHSBCA East-West All-Star Game on July 1 at Comerica Park. Wenson hit .400 as a junior and is the son of U-M alum Paul Wenson (1985-86).

Junior Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and senior Patrick Biondi (Woodhaven, Mich./Divine Child) were selected on the second day of the draft. O'Neill went in the third round to the New York Yankees, while Biondi was drafted in the ninth round by the New York Mets.
