ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head baseball coach Rich Maloney announced today (Monday, June 21) the addition of RHP Jake Engels (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) to the team's 2010 recruiting class. Engels becomes the eighth prep to commit to the program for the 2011 season.
Engels went 24-7 while earning three varsity letters at Portage Northern. During his senior campaign, he went 11-3 with a sparkling 0.89 earned-run average and 68 strikeouts to lead the Huskies to a district title. As a sophomore, he went 6-3 and earned All-SMAC honorable mention. In his first season as a letterwinner, Engels went 7-1 with a 2.66 ERA and was tabbed to the All-SMAC Central Division team. Engels also excelled in the classroom, earning honor roll each year and high honors during his senior year.
"We are excited to have Jake join our family," Maloney said. "He has a nice arm. He has a good fastball with some late life on it and the makings of a good breaking pitch. He had a very successful season at Portage Northern, leading his team to an excellent campaign. We see Jake having a very outstanding future in our program."
Engels joins seven other players in the 2010 class, including IF Mark Bass (Pace, Fla./Pace), RHP Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), C Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn), OF Michael O'Neill (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), RHP Jonathon Perry (Royal Oak, Mich./U of D Jesuit), OF Adam Robinson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and RHP Brett Winger (Orlando, Fla./Olympia).
The Wolverines finished the 2010 season with a 35-22 overall record, marking the eighth straight season that the club has reached the 30-win plateau.
