PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior right-handed pitcher Ben Ballantine (Napa, Calif./Napa) of the University of Michigan baseball team has been granted a fifth year of eligibility, the Big Ten Conference announced today (Thursday, July 27). Ballantine will have one year of eligibility remaining during the 2013-2014 academic year.
Ballantine made seven appearances and five starts on the mound in 2013 before a season-ending ankle injury occurring on April 2 in the Bowling Green game. A member of U-M's leadership council, Ballantine was 1-1 with a 2.62 earned-run average and 21 strikeouts in 24 innings pitched. He earned a win against Holy Cross on March 7, striking out three batters and giving up four hits and two earned runs in six innings. He also had five strikeouts in two appearances in 2013, against Akron on March 17 and Western Illinois on March 23.
Ballantine will enter the 2014 season with a 6-5 record and a 4.28 earned-run average in his Wolverine career. He has struck out 121 batters in 160 innings pitched in 51 appearances and 23 starts.
