DETROIT, Mich. -- University of Michigan baseball senior right-handed pitcher Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) has signed a free-agent deal with the Detroit Tigers this morning (Tuesday, Aug. 12). Lakatos reported to Lakeland, Fla., on Monday and will be assigned to a minor league affiliate this week.
Lakatos made 61 career appearances for the Maize and Blue on the mound, striking out 96 batters in his four years at U-M. This past season, he made 11 appearances for Michigan with a pair of starts. Lakatos struck out five and allowed a run in a four-inning start against Florida Gulf Coast (March 4) and struck out the side in an inning's work against Indiana (March 22). He had a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings in the Senior Day win over Kansas (May 18).
Lakatos becomes the fourth Wolverines from the 2014 team to sign a professional contract. Juniors James Bourque (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Trent Szkutnik (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) were drafted by the Washington Nationals and Detroit, respectively, and inked pro deals. Senior Cole Martin (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn) signed a deal with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League.
