Michigan Announces Recruiting Class for 2014-15

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball program and head coach Erik Bakich have announced the recruiting class for the 2014-15 academic year today (Tuesday, Sept. 2). The Wolverines have 11 incoming recruits -- nine freshmen and two junior college transfers. The Maize and Blue also had three signees selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in June.

Joining the Maize and Blue for the 2014-15 season are Jake Bivens (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview), Cody Bruder (Corona, Calif./Orange Coast College), Michael Hendrickson (Saline, Mich./Saline), Oliver Jaskie (Ada, Mich./Grandville), Ty Kiafoulis (Brighton Twp., Mich./Brother Rice), Drew Lugbauer (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington), Michael McNichol (Alta Loma, Calif./Barstow C.C.), Ryan Nutof (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin), Bryan Pall (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), Grant Reuss (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) and Jayce Vancena (Millbury, Ohio/Lake).

"Coach (Nick) Schnabel, Coach (Sean) Kenny and our entire staff did another outstanding job putting together one of the nation's elite recruiting classes," Bakich said. "This group of newcomers is extremely talented on the field as well as in the classroom, and we are looking forward to helping them develop to their maximum potential as students, athletes and men."

Michigan finished the 2014 season with a 30-29-1 overall record and a 13-11 mark in Big Ten play. Michigan ended in a tie for fourth in the Big Ten regular season and was one of the last four teams remaining in the Big Ten Tournament.

Jake Bivens - IF/OF - Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview
Was an All-State first team selection his senior season at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Mich. ... Also was named to the All-State first team as a junior and second team as a sophomore ... Set the career hits record and had a .400 career batting average at Lakeview ... Was a four-time All-City and All-SMAC selection ... Named to the all-district team his final three seasons at Lakeview ... Scored 40 runs and had 30 RBI while being named to the MHSBCA's Dream Team in 2014 ... Invited to play in the East/West All-Star Game at Comerica Park ... Played summer baseball for the Kalamazoo Maroons from 2009-14 ... Also played basketball and football at Lakeview ... Was a three-year member of Lakeview's National Honor Society.

Cody Bruder - OF - Corona, Calif./Orange Coast College
Was an All-Orange Empire Conference first team selection his sophomore season at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif. ... Hit .359 with 10 doubles, eight triples, four home runs and 31 RBI for the Pirates in 2014 ... Also was named to the All-Southern California team as a sophomore ... Helped Orange Coast College to a number-one junior college ranking by PerfectGame.org in 2014 ... Hit .336 as a freshman with six doubles, three triples and 28 RBI ... Attended Santiago High School in Santiago, Calif., graduating in 2012 ... Earned first team all-league honors and was named the team's Offensive Player of the Year and Student-Athlete Award winner with a 4.1 GPA as a senior ...

Michael Hendrickson - LHP - Saline, Mich./Saline
Was an All-State first team and an MHSBCA Dream Team member his senior season at Saline High School in Saline, Mich. ... Is a two-time all-district, all-region and All-SEC honoree ... Was a captain his senior season with the Hornets ... Played summer baseball for A2 Green in 2013-14 ... Also played basketball at Saline, earning first team All-SEC honors as a senior ... Was a four-year member of the Honor Roll, was on Saline's National Honor Society and graduated with the highest honors with distinction (top-five percent of the graduating class) ... Father is Dr. C. Daniel Hendrickson, the Director of Medical Services and Team Physician for the U-M Athletic Medical Staff.

Oliver Jaskie - LHP - Ada, Mich./Grandville
Was 7-1 with a 1.96 earned-run average his senior season at Grandville High School in Grandville, Mich. ... Also hit .534 with a .607 on-base percentage in 2014 ... Earned all-region, all-district and all-conference honors and played in the MHSBCA East/West All-Star Game at Comerica Park ... Was enrolled at Forest Hills Central High School in Ada, Mich., his first three years of high school ... Helped Forest Hills Central to a district championship his junior year ... Played summer baseball for Diamonds Baseball from 2009-14 .... Also played on the Prep Baseball Report Team Michigan in 2012 ... Was in the National Honor Society and was an AP scholar.

Ty Kiafoulis - OF/1B - Brighton Twp., Mich./Brother Rice
Hit .387 his senior season at Brother Rice High School in Birmingham, Mich., helping the Warriors to a third consecutive Catholic League championship ... Belted five home runs to go along with a .341 batting average his junior season ... Was a four-year letterwinner at Brother Rice ... Also played football and basketball at Brother Rice, helping the football team to three consecutive state titles ... Played summer baseball for the Detroit Metro Stars, Midwest Elite and Warrior Baseball ... Was on the honor roll three years at Brother Rice.

Drew Lugbauer - C - Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington
Was a Perfect Game Third Team All-America selection and an All-Northeast Region first team selection at Arlington High School in LaGrangeville, N.Y. ... Was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 21st round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft ... Hit .430 with eight home runs, 23 RBI and a .930 slugging percentage his final season at Arlington ... Named to the all-state, all-section and all-region team and was the Poughkeepsie Journal's Player of the Year in 2014 ... Also was named the Dutchess County and MSG Varsity Player of the Year his senior season ... Hit .446 with four home runs and 26 RBI his junior year at Arlington ... Was named to the All-Foothill Conference first team his sophomore season at Barstow Community College in Barstow, Calif. ... Hit .340 for Barstow in 2014 with 29 RBI and 22 stolen bases ... Went to high school at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. ... Hit .424 and had a .486 on-base percentage as a senior at Los Osos.

Ryan Nutof - RHP - South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin
Was 8-1 with a 0.54 earned-run average and struck out 112 batters his senior season at South Elgin High School in South Elgin, Ill. ... Was named to the All-State, All-Area and All-Upstate 8 teams as well as being named the Kane County Daily Herald and Elgin Courier Player of the Year ... Had a 0.76 ERA with 57 strikeouts and only 12 walks his junior season ... Was an all-conference and all-area selection in 2013 ... Played in the 2014 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif. ... Helped Lake to a Northern Buckeye Conference title, a 19-game winning streak and 27 total wins ... Named to the All-Ohio first team as well as the All-Wood Country and Suburban Press first teams ...
